Springboro, Ohio – June 2010 – The American Board of Phlebology has announced that Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby has earned board certification in the specialty of phlebology from the American Board of Phlebology. Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby was first board certified by the ABPh in June of 2009. This is the second class of Diplomates for ABPh, which now includes an exclusive group of 412 Diplomates nationwide.

It’s with great pride that we announce this accomplishment by Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby. His certification with the American Board of Phlebology is a direct reflection of his skill, knowledge, and experience in providing quality patient care, and his continued commitment to the advancement of vein care. To become board certified is truly an accomplishment. Less than 1% of all Phlebology professionals in Canada and the U.S. have earned certification from the ABPh.

To become an ABPh diplomate, an applicant must complete the requisite training or experience qualifications, meet the continuing medical education requisites, and pass a stringent certification examination. Certification periods are ten years and maintenance is dependent on the ability of the diplomate to display competency in four areas of assessment: evidence of professional standing, evidence of commitment to lifelong-learning and periodic self-assessment, evidence of cognitive expertise, evaluation of performance in practice.

Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby, a long-term Dayton resident, is highly skilled in non-invasive evaluations, diagnostic angiograms and interventional cardiology and vascular procedures. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Dayton and attended medical school at Ohio State University. Dr. Sinnathamby is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology as well as a Fellow of the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. Dr. Sinnathamby attended Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he finished his fellowship training in General and Interventional Cardiology, interventional vascular procedures, and also completed his certification as a Vascular Medicine Specialist.  He is Board Certified in Endovascular Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology.

On June 19, 2006, Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby, opened the doors to the new vein treatment center, Varicose to Perfect in Springboro, Ohio. Patients who seek relief from varicose and spider veins in the Greater Dayton area and Northern Cincinnati will be treated to advanced vein and laser solutions, including Endovenous Laser Ablation, Hook Phlebectomy, and Schlerotherapy. While Varicose to Perfect caters to patients seeking to erase a few years from their appearance, the practice is very adept at diagnosing and treating more serious varicose veins and circulatory concerns. Dr. Sinnathamby’s decades of experience in vascular medicine bring top notch care to patients and use the least invasive treatments available.

The American Board of Phlebology (www.americaboardofphlebology.org) is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 2007 for the purpose of certifying physicians who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of phlebology. The American Board of Phlebology (ABPh) was established to;

1. Improve the standards of medical practitioners and the quality of patient care related to the treatment of venous
disorders and all aspects of venous disease
2. Serve the public and the medical profession by establishing initial and continuing qualifications for certification
and maintenance of certification as physician specialists in the practice of phlebology
3. Examine physician candidates for certification and maintenance of certification in the practice of phlebology

Two different kinds of veins make up the venous system in the body: superficial and deep. Superficial veins are located between the muscles and the skin and deep veins are found between muscles. Vein systems are linked by veins with one-way valves, which typically ensure blood flows from superficial veins to deep veins. If these valves fail, the blood will flow from the deep veins and then back to the superficial veins, normally forming varicose veins.

Venous leg ulcers usually occur because these valves that are not properly functioning. Venous ulcers affect between 500,000 and 600,000 people in the US each year and account for nearly 90% of leg ulcers. Venous ulcers are commonly seen in people who suffer with a history of varicose veins, leg swelling or blood clots. These ulcers can affect a single leg or both legs.

Risk factors of venous leg ulcers include:

~Age: These types of ulcers usually recur in older people.
~Sex: Women have a higher tendency to suffer from them. Hormonal changes from pregnancy, hormonal replacement therapy, menopause and birth control are factors that increase the formation of venous leg ulcers.
~Obesity. Someone who is overweight has an increased risk of venous leg ulcers because of the increased pressure on the veins.
~Employment. Activities or jobs that require standing for a long time are risk factors with standing increasing the pressure that is put on the veins.

Symptoms of leg ulcers include swollen legs, dryness, itching and sometimes brownish-colored skin that surrounds the ulcers and appearance that is weeping and raw and located right above the ankle usually inside the leg.

The goal of treating venous leg ulcers is to relieve the pain, quicken recovery and heal the ulcer. Each patient has a different treatment plan and is based on the person’s health, condition and ability to be able to care for the sore. The ulcers are treated with leg compression to minimize swelling. Compression treatments include multilayer compression wraps, compression stockings, wrapping of an ACE bandage or dressing the entire area below the knee. The compression used will be determined and prescribed by the patient’s physician. Dressing types include hydrogels, alginate, collagen, debriding, antimicrobial, composite and synthetic skin.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are a frustrating sign of physical changes and age. Although they rarely cause any physical discomfort, they point to a need for a better focus on your health. Once you understand what causes spider veins, it is easy to determine what may have caused them and how to keep more from appearing.

Spider veins look like webs of blood just under the skin’s surface. They are small veins filled with pooled blood caused by malfunctioning valves in the vein. The valves in the vein keep blood going upward, back to the heart. These valves are constantly battling the force of gravity and physical issues, making their job very difficult. Over time the valves weaken and the result is a back flow of blood in small branches.

The most common causes of spider veins are age, obesity and hormonal fluctuations. The veins become weak over time, resulting in an increase of spider veins as we get older. Obesity puts unnecessary demand on the venous system, increasing the pressure on the veins, leading to an early weakening of the entire system. In addition to the weakening of the veins, age and obesity are usually connected to less physical activity. This causes less circulation and muscle strength. Both of these support the venous system and keep it strong. Hormonal fluctuations are believed to relax the vein walls, allowing for blood to pool. Factors, such as pregnancy and menopause, are causes for a significant percentage of spider veins. This explains the majority of those suffering from spider veins are women.

Additional causes of spider veins are genetics and employment. A family history for spider veins can indicate a future issue. Jobs that require long hours of sitting or standing may also lead to multiple spider veins. Since most spider veins are found on the legs, it is important to keep them moving. Those that stand for long periods of time should keep their feet up when resting. People that sit for hours at a desk should take breaks often to walk around and improve circulation.

Knowing what causes spider veins and paying attention to the factors that specifically apply to you can be powerful allies in fighting off these cosmetic frustrations. Some factors, such as hormone changes and age, are unavoidable. Good physical health helps the body fight against these inescapable weaknesses and slow down the appearance of spider veins.

Unsightly veins that appear just below the surface of the skin, often on the legs and feet can be varicose veins. Varicose veins are caused by pressure from walking and standing. They are the result of faulty valves within the veins. The venous system consists of arteries that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the systems of the body and to the limbs; and veins that return the blood to the heart after the oxygen has been used by the body. Because the blood being returned from the lower extremities must act against gravity in its return to the heart, the muscle contractions in the lower extremities works as pumps to assist in this return. Additionally, the veins contain numerous one way valves that prevent the blood from returning to the lower extremities. These valves act as check valves and when they fail, they cause varicose veins because they allow the blood to pool in the veins instead of returning to the heart.

Some people are at a higher risk for varicose veins than others. Increased risk factors of varicose veins include:
–Genetics. A family history of varicose veins increases the risk.
–Obesity. Individuals who are overweight are at greater risk for varicose veins because of the increased pressure caused by the extra weight.
–Occupations that involve lengthy periods of standing. Standing for extended periods of time increases the risk for two reasons. First, it increases the pressure on the lower extremities. Secondly, it increases the amount of time that the valves have to work to overcome the gravity that causes the pooling of blood in the vens.
–Pregnancy. Pregnancy causes greater risk factors because the volume of blood in the body increases and because it decreases the flow of blood from the legs to the pelvis.

Symptoms of varicose veins include: bulging and twisted veins visible below the skin, dark purple or blue veins, achy legs, and muscle cramping. Complications include blood clots and ulcers caused by long term build up of fluid around the problem area. Patients may seek treatment simply for cosmetic reasons in an effort to remove the unsightly blemishes. They may also seek treatment when they are unable to self-manage the condition through exercise, elevation of the legs, or treatment with compression stockings. Varicose veins can often be treated through minimally invasive surgical and laser procedures.

Suffer no longer! Reach out for relief.

Many endure the discomfort and humiliation of unsightly veins, unaware that successful, comfortable, minimally invasive treatment options are available.

Varicose and spider veins do not go away without treatment, so seeking medical attention is imperative.

“Venous disease is greatly underdiagnosed,” says Sukir Sinnathamby, MD.  “People should not accept swollen, tired legs as part of aging when help is available through state-of-the-art outpatient procedures with minimal risk. My patients are awake during treatment- eating, drinking, relaxing, and even watching movies. In most cases they are walking out the door twenty minutes later”.

Endovascular medicine has seen significant advancements. At Varicose to Perfect, Dr. Sinnathamby begins with a careful evaluation and ultrasound mapping of the veins of his patient’s legs. Dr. Sinnathambys’ decades of experience in vascular medicine allow him to more accurately assess venous disease by looking for the underlying cause of the unsightly veins on the surface of the leg.  “At our vascular lab, patients can feel confident they will receive a full health evaluation, “assures Dr. Sinnathamby.

He then recommends the best treatment plan, which may include endovascular (within the vein) laser procedures, micro-incision ambulatory phlebectomy, or the precision of enhanced injection therapy (schlerotherapy). The result is legs that look and feel healthy again.

Dr. Sinnathamby and Staff,

My experience with treatments at the Varicose to Perfect office were more positive than I expected and I feel that I now have “liberated legs!”

Dr. Sinnathamby is an artist (in my opinion) in his techniques. He is a kind and very compassionate physician. He displayed a passion about this profession and made certain I was comfortable and in no pain during my first treatment with the Endovenous Laser Therapy and my second for the Hook Phlebectomy. He assured me of complete ambulatory status and it was true. Both times I was up and about the same evenings and enjoyed dinner at our favorite neighborhood restaurant spots. One was with in walking distance and I took advantage of the opportunity to exercise the leg.

By walking daily as prescribed, I was able to resume mild exercise classes in ten days and back to my water aerobics in two weeks. I experienced NO PAIN and only a little discomfort. The only nuisance was the daily donning of the compression hose to treated leg!

By liberated legs, I mean I feel free from the worry of inflammatory thrombophlebitis and I am rid of the unsightly knotted veins. Dr. Sinnathamby’s entire staff was friendly, helpful and patient with all the questions I asked regarding these type of procedures. They all were informed and each were on the same track with follow up advice for me.

If you are having any vein issues, I highly recommend you need only look to one entity- Varicose to Perfect!

Sincerely,

Roberta

Before I went to see Dr. Sinnathamby and his staff my legs would ache, throb and feel tired almost every day. I tried different things, but I could not get any relief from the pain. If I had an activity planned that involved a lot of time on my feet, I was unsure as to whether I should even go. With a family history of varicose veins my legs had become more painful over the last couple of years. Along with the pain, I also was embarrassed about the way my legs looked because of the spider and varicose veins. I had even stopped wearing shorts last summer. For a few years I had put off doing anything about this problem, but after seeing their website and talking to the office I made an appointment.

Making the decision to start care with Varicose to Perfect was exactly what I needed.  After my diagnosis had been made I was scheduled for the procedure to correct my problems. The doctor and staff were friendly and professional and I felt very comfortable there.

Now I can do the activities I enjoy without having pain and I am so happy with the way my legs look. I am back to wearing shorts again!

Thank you,

Debbie

My hook phlebectomy was on August 8, 2009, and I was very nervous.  However, my nerves were calmed by the time we were ready to start.  The technician  was very nice, very reassuring, and the doctor was considerate, concerned about pain, and extremely detailed in his work.  The most calming thing was the way they spoke to me and laughed with me as if they had known me for years.  I never expected to have such a good experience during a vein procedure.  Doctor Sinnathamby knows exactly what he is doing and I haven’t felt this good in 10 years.  I would recommend Varicose to Perfect to anyone with varicose veins.
